SCENIC RIVER ROAD TOUR FOR TWO - Bicycle, jog or drive the scenic River Road from Peterborough to Lakefield. From downtown cross the river on the Trans Canada Trail, on the train-trestle bridge and take the Rotary Trail along the river to Trent University and continue another twelve kilometers to Lakefield. Great views of Trent campus on the river, early morning mists off the river, birds and country quiet. The trail and the road are tranquil and inspiring. And the reward at the end of the road is ice cream across from the 'stop' sign, the village of Lakefield where you can shop for antiques, watch the locks, and a fabulous picinic gourmet picnic lunch from In A Nuttshell, Lakefield's Gourmet Foodstore and Catering Service. Take a dip at the public beach in the campground across the bridge (turn right at the light). FOLK UNDER THE CLOCK TOUR FOR TWO – Arrive on Friday and have dinner at a local restaurant downtown, relax at the guesthouse listening to your choices from the music library or stroll through the downtown to find some live performances. Visit the local Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning to find some local fare, and in the afternoon visit Moondance Records for a great music store experience. The Folk concert is at Market Hall, 8pm. It's the last concert this season, on Saturday, 23 April, and it’s a Double Bill, with David Francey (Canada) and Jez Lowe (U.K.). CREAM & CHEDDAR TOUR FOR TWO Tours to the factory stores of two of the finest dairy operations in the Kawartha Lakes Region -- Kawartha Dairy, Bobcaygeon and Empire Cheese Factory, Campbellford. This tour includes visits to the best shopping the area has to offer, a delight for those with exquisite taste in food, art, clothing and home and garden wares. Check in to King Bethune House and enjoy the evening exploring the cafes, pubs and nightlife of downtown Peterborough. In the morning after breakfast take a tour through the countryside of the Kawartha Lakes. If you are starting your tour on a Saturday, the Peterborough Farmers Market (at the Memorial Centre 7am to noon) is a worthwhile diversion, particularly if you like local and organic food, fresh from the farm. From the vendors you can easily throw together a five star picnic. First stop is Curve Lake's Whetung Ojibway Art Gallery, a wonderful art collection and artisan crafts for the shopper. From Curve Lake continue through Buckhorn to Bobcaygeon where you will find Kawartha Dairy, the source of the creamiest ice cream money can buy. They have a special new flavour in 2008 to celebrate the Trent Severn Waterway's 175th Anniversary. It is called 'Unlocked and Loaded'. Bobcaygeon has locks and a great little shopping district, famous for its shoe store. Return via Burleigh Falls and Youngs Point to visit the heritage store, Lockside Trading Company. Check out the Locks operation, and take a stroll over the walking bridge to The Old Bridge Inn. Enjoy a drink on the patio or have a meal. The food is fabulous and the fresh air by the water is rejuvenating. Jump off the walking bridge into the current below if the adventure suits you. Return to 'home' at King Bethune House to relax in the garden by the outdoor fire pit. The next morning meander south on Hwy 28 to Bailieboro and down the hills to Bewdley on the south side of Rice Lake. This little village has a great view of the lake and an interesting place for wings on the patio called The Rhino Bar. Continue through the hills of Northumberland to Campbellford then South toward Stirling about 5 miles to the Empire Cheese & Butter Factory Outlet Store. Return to Peterborough via Hastings and Keene. Serpent Mounds Park, a five minute diversion down to Rice Lake where there is a sacred burial ground, a wonderful peaceful place by the water and a picnic grounds, beach and interpretive centre. Back in Peterborough, it is a 5 minute walk from King Bethune House to a Scottish Tea at Hutchison House, a historic house with artifacts of Sir Sandford Fleming (inventor of Standard Time). The tea is worth the drive, with scones and homemade preserves and rich cream. EMMA'S CREATIVE CRAFTS TOUR FOR TWO (or 3 or 4 children) – Two hours in King Bethune Guest House with young people's best friend, Emma, making pens, brooches, bracelets, paintings and/or sculptures using a variety of mediums. For example, work with paper, paint, sculpy, airdry clay, beads and foods. For children 2 to 12 years. Emma is currently enrolled at Fleming College in the Educational Assistant Program. Emma has taught "Artistic Time" for 5 years at the Uxbridge Montessori Summer Day Camp and has a special talent for children with disabilities. Adult supervision required for younger children.
